We had been out for quiet for a while , work commitments and of course ,we got a new toy , Blackberry 9700 aka Bold 2 . During the past 72 hours of my usage , I extensively used Blackberry even putting aside my Nokia’s to get the wholesome feel of it and see why people become Crackberry not Nokheads and I’m not impressed , in the upcoming posts we will cover BB and Nokia step by step where one supersedes the other , starting with the main feature of both Messaging and Emails .
Nokia Messaging and Blackberry both support upto 10 email solutions and provide real time email push services , but there are a number of things on which they both have advantages over each other
HTML Email :
BlackBerry does not support HTML Emails out of the box , while the Nokia Messaging supports both text based and HTML Email out of the box and is even capable enough to play YouTube Videos directly from the email.
Ease of Setup
To Setup Blackberry , I had to go to my carrier site at warid.blackberry.com and setup emails and everytime I need to add an email , I have to follow the same procedure . With Nokia Messaging , I can add or delete email addresses right off the phone , no need to go to a separate page just to add email accounts.
Accessibility :
Blackberry is a closed email solution , bound by the carrier , i.e. I cannot simply pop any SIM into my BB and expect it to start getting emails on the go . In Pakistan where having multiple SIMs from a number of networks is the norm , for Blackberry users , they are bound by the SIM they are using . The bigger problem is when travelling abroad , I cannot simply use any local SIM card and expect to get my emails , I have to use my local providers International Data roaming services which will be very expensive or get a local Blackberry service which is not feasible for a 10 days vacation . With Nokia Messaging that’s not the case , all it needs is Internet / Data connection be it from Warid in Pakistan or ATT in USA , any SIM with data access will enable it access emails .
Ease of Use :
Here Blackberry leaves Nokia Messaging far behind . By integrating all the emails from multiple accounts , Twitter Messages , SMS and MMS in a single view , it offers the ease to go through the emails and messages, in Nokia Messaging I have to access every email account and also separate SMS menus .
Reliability :
Blackberry again supersedes Nokia Messaging , with few outages throughout the year as compared to a number of stopage of services in Nokia MEssages which I experienced in past 12 months due to change in software and other issues .
Costs :
Using Blackberry is expensive , from equipment cost to cost of access , Blackberry is far expensive than Nokia Messaging . Top of the line Blackberry device like the Bold 2 , costs around Rs 50,000 in Pakistan ( USD 600 approx ) while comparable E72 costs only Rs 31,000 ( USD 375 approx ) . In running costs , I can use Nokia Messaging on my local EDGE connection available at Rs 500 ( USD 6 - 2 GB limit ) and with BIS services I have to pay double that at Rs 1000 per month plus 30 % taxes . So in the long run , Blackberry services will prove to be more expensive than Nokia Messaging
Conclusion
I think I should have stayed with Nokia , which is much more flexible , I miss my early morning routine of which phone to use ( my current collection is N900 , N97 Mini , iPhone , Blackberry 9700 and Nokia 8910i ) now with Blackberry BIS activated on my mail work number , I cannot use the SIM on any of my other phones as Internet access will not work on them . Nokia Messaging although newer than Blackberry has evolved much faster and have better range of feature set than Blackberry such as HTML emails . My advice to those wanting to shift to Blackberry is to give Nokia Messaging a try and trust me you will forget the Blackberry .
