For 15 days we had the Nokia Booklet 3G courtesy @womworldnokia . We started with the journey it took to reach us , followed by Un-Boxing , moving to Walk Around , Size Comparison and finally in this post we will cover what we found good about the Booklet 3G , what was the bad and what was outright ugly .
The Good
There are so many good things to talk about the Booklet 3G , from it’s slim 19.9 mm form factor to it’s HD Glass screen to extra long battery life and multiple connectivity options all features making it ideal for carrying around
The Size
Only 19.9 mm thick and weighing only 1.25 kg , the Aircraft grade aluminum made Book, let is easy to carry around when out in the field .
Battery Life
For a couple of days we used Booklet as our exclusive computer carrying it from morning to night for every thing from writing blog posts to using it in an office environment and it’s battery life won us over . Seriously we wanted it to die during the day but it never did and gave us almost 8 hours in our real world usage of movie watching , SIM card usage , Bluetooth connectivity with phones and of course office work .
Screen :
For a day we even took it for field work and every client we had was awed by the outlook of the booklet and it was very well received not to mention it’s great 720 pixel screen made running PowerPoint a smooth experience and we were able to run around the whole day with it running from client to client
Connectivity Options
With SIM card connectivity option , net connectivity was a breeze all we had to do was to provide our APN for Warid telecom and it was running , we never felt out of reach anywhere and with auto switch from WiFi to SIM data we were never out of touch
Readiness
Out of box readiness with Microsoft Office trial edition and f secure anti virus we took it out of box and it was ready for businesss
The Bad
Not everything is as rosy as it seems with the Booklet 3G , the thing is not without it’s flaws from A-GPS to non upgradability there were certain flaws in the Booklet 3G
A-GPS –
Nokia why did you put an A-GPS and made it work only with your properitery OVI Widget , all the GPS was good was to show your location on the widget and take you to the OVI maps site
Touch Pad :
It was a constant ongoing battle with the touch pad buttons which were very unresponsive and hard to press .
1GB Ram:
Nokia what are you thinking only 1GB RAM and that too soldered to chipset and non user upgradeable . The drawback is that Win & at times runs sluggish I have another netbook and with 2GB Ram and Win 7 Pro it flies . Nokia either upgraqde the RAM or maybe users will shift to Win XP for netbook ( Drivers not available )
120 GB Hard Disk:
Nokia now even the most inexpensive of the netbooks come with 160GB Hard Disk and with Win 7 and other software preinstalled I got around 90 GB usable space
No RJ-45 LAN Connector:
Nokia not everywhere we get WiFi sometimes in hotels and offices RJ-45 is the way to go and Booklet got no connectivity for that (optional connector is available at a cost )
No VGA OUT Port :
Again Nokia gave HDMI out which is great on connecting Booklet to LCD TVs and for us on the go , well our projectors only support VGA Port and it was no where on Booklet again an optional connector is available at a cost
Placement of @ Symbol :
Nokia look at other keyboards even the one you are using in your office , the @key is always above number 2 key not at the extreme right side near the shift key . With this new keyboard layout , it sure will cause some confusions when typing
Booklet is Hot:
Nokia Booklet 3G is extra quiet with it’s fanless design , the draw back HEAT , the thing gets hot and with our ambient temeperature around 35 Degree Celsius plus , it’s scorching hot
The Ugly
There is only one thing about Booklet 3G which it’s downright horrific , it’s Price with price around 650 Quids ( British Pound Sterling ) as per our trial contract at this price a contract free netbook is ridiculous and with the duties which we paid the total sum was around Rs 100,000 . With this price I may buy a Sony Vaio with BlueRay player and the works or with a lil extra a new Apple MacBook .
Our advice to Nokia is do go through the spec sheet , look what market is offering and also at what price , Nokia name does has a premium but the Netbook market is dominated by likes of Asus , Acer , Dell and HPs which offer better specs at a much lower price .
This is what we think about Nokia Booklet 3G , the Good , The Bad and The Ugly - what about you ? What’s your though on it , do inform us in comments
