As per the Frobes Magazine Article , GETJAR is refuting Nokia’s Claim to have OVI Store as No 2 in App Stores after Apple.
For those unfamiliar with GetJar it’s like the first ever App Store in existence , way before there was even a concept of App Store . I’d been using it since 2005 with I first got my Nokia E61 . GetJar had been a one stop shop for all the software needs and still many people have it as their favorite .
Nostalgia aside , GetJar has came a long way from being a Java App place , from here it get’s the name Get JAR ( for Java Apps ) to a full fledge application provider even carrying Nokia OVI Store App .
With Nokia’s recent claim OVI Store of being second after Apple App Store with one million downloads a day as said by Tero Ojanpera Nokia’s Executive Vice President of Services , GetJar immediately refutes the claim that it’s No 2 with 1.7 million downloads a day or 50 million App downloads a month .
Hitting the figures further , Get Jar has apps for virtually every mobile with support for more than 1700 different models from every manufacturer making Java App enabled mobile phone and covers 95 % of the 4 billion mobile phone market .
If that’s not enough , Ilja Laurs - Chief Executive GetJar says that Nokia is adding Apps with media content and even wallpapers in their download figures of 1 million per day and Get Jar is talking only 1.7 million Apps per day which makes Nokia’s figures fall even below .
Nokia’s spokesman Joseph Gallo tells Forbes that the company meant to say that it is the No. 2 content store offered and operated by a handset manufacturer. The figure, he notes, does not include app stores like GetJar that aggregate applications for multiple phone brands and operating systems.
Ilja says "The message is misleading to the industry and developers,
Why the Dispute for the top spot ?
Well with the rising of so many app stores from Apple , to Windows to Android , to Nokia to Samsung and what not it’s getting hard to get hold of developers and the top positions ensures that developers will work for the platform like Apple with it’s top position of 100,000 thousand apps , more than 2.5 billion downloads with only 50 million or so devices has seen much creative development as compared to Nokia with it’s major chunk in the device market but still lagging way behind Apple in Application choices .
GetJAr with their claim wants to attract developers towards them as with the largest compatibility , they are not targeting the 2nd position but the First and wants to dethrone Apple as Ilja says “ "There are 4 billion non-iPhones on the planet and probably only 50 million active iPhones, Inevitably, the moment will come when we will pass the App Store."
What do you think will Get Jar be able to surpass Apple- do inform in comments
