My Nokia My Vacations – App selection

by Farhan on June 19, 2010

So I’ve selected Nokia N97 Mini and Nokia N86 8 MP to be travel companions for vacations but these phones alone cannot do much except making calls and taking photographs , they need to be filled them Apps to enhance their productivity . As both the phones are S60 based ( V3 and V5 ) much of the software they will have are same with exception of a few . I’ve decided to install the following applications to make my experience with the phones more fruitful .

Nokia Messaging – Being away from office does not mean being away from work , being a marketer I know how important it is to be  in touch with the customers , so I’m ditching my Blackberry ( can’t get BlackBerry Services for a few weeks any where )  and shifting to Nokia Messaging which has support for upto 10 email accounts and can pull them as effectively as a Blackberry .

OVI Maps -  Malaysia and Dubai are not new for me but again I don’t go there everyday , so I’m updating my OVI Maps with maps for Malaysia and Dubai along with Voice Guidance by Surfer Dude (  English ) and Urdu .  I also have set another Voice Pack using Own Voice having my kids voice . With the latest OVI Maps I also have the option to access to Lonely Planet’s database and mark all the points of interest which I’ve never been to at both the places.  I’ve also marked some places near my hotel like shopping malls etc on Nokia Maps online and synced it with my OVI Maps on my phones to have a handy  offline reference

QIK Premium :  I can’t have a Camcorder handy at all the times and what better to share the moments with family and friends back at home than with QIK Premium . Capable to take high quality videos and upload them instantly to QIK servers , my family and friends can share the experience with me in real time

Fring :  International telephony had always been one of the major expense but with Fring , I will always be in touch with people back home via numerous IM clients and SKYPE for VOIP

PSILOC Traveler : Will tomorrow be good for a walk at Kota Kinabalu part or should we go snorkling , the weather updates at Psiloc Traveler will help us decide .

Wikitude   :  Augmented Reality at it’s best , I can go to a POI , start the Wikitude and see who had been here and who has posted their pcitures and videos of the place on Flickr and Youtube , good to get the tips and know what to see

Mobi Pocket :  I have some 7 hours plane flight from Dubai to KL and vice versa , although the entertainment selection at Emirates is out of this world , the bookwork in me wants to read so I’ll be loading my phone with Mobi files covering latest in Business to Fiction

QIBLA Finder -  Being a Muslim it’s compulsory on me to pray five times a day facing Mecca and while travelling finding the right directions is very difficult , now Off Screen , the people with the most touch applications avaulable for any Nokia device has introduced Qibla , an offline compass based Qibla finder for me to find the right direction to Mecca.

Gravity  – does this app need an introduction , the best thing to keep  in touch with friends in Twitter , FAcebook and update my location via 4Square there is no alternate to it .

QuickOffice -  Again my work plays an important role here , while my wife and kids will be busy having fun , I can take a sneak peak at the proposals and reports from my office and send some of my own -

So the 10 applications with which I will be travelling are all listed , do you think I’m missing on any , do inform us in comments .
