N97 or Nokia Rover what should be my choice

by Farhan on June 3, 2009

While Nokia N97 is in it’s final stage of launch ,and it’s going to be a big launch with 75 countries simultaneously getting the phone ,  a product leak is making tech junkies drooling for the next high end offering from Nokia’s platform the Nokia N900 aka Rover

Rover is a unique offering from Nokia as unlike Nokia phones it will be featuring Maemo 5 which is based on Linux in continuation of N810 Internet Tablets and as Eldar Murtazain of Daily Mobile puts it “ Some say N97 is the next communicator no The next version of communicator will feature Linux” and Rover does .

Other specs of Rover includes 59.7 mm x 111 mm x 18.2 mm size , 5 MegaPixel Carl Zeiss Camera , Dual LED Flash , OMAP3430 500 / 600 MHZ processor , 1GB total virtual runtime memory, 3.5 inch display , 800 x 480 resolution , Accelerometer , GPS , UMTS , HSDPA , WiFI slide out QWERTY keyboard .

The N900 in my opinion could feature Caapcitive Touch Screen as Nokia is rumored to be placing orders for them although it’s not confirmed by anyone .

So Nokia introduces/ leaks a N97 killer before N97 is launched why so , could it be in the desperation to stop people to buy Palm Pre and the latest iPhone . For Rover the expected date of launch is July ’09 through T-Mobile International and in selected early adapter markets like Middle East and Asia .

Where I’ll go well now I’ve got eyes for Rover why ?

N 97 will always be the entertainment centric device at heart , I can install business apps easily but still it’s best for Music , Videos , Net and entertainment . Rover in my opinion and as Murtazain puts it could be the next communicator that means a business centric device , again I may not get many apps in the beginning to play it with Rover being based on Maemo/ Linux however it’s SDK is out for the develoeprs and the newer API include

  • Location API: methods to build location-aware applications.
  • City Information: methods to obtain information about cities, including city name, country name, and country code.
  • Time management: an interface for handling time change notifications and collect relevant time and time zone information.
  • Vibra service: methods for triggering and controlling vibrations.
  • Device orientation: respond to changes in orientation and discover current orientation.

All I can say is I want to play with it , call it craving of a tech junkie always looking to the next best toy :)

Cravingly
