N97 Reclaim Thy Memory

by Farhan on July 23, 2009

Nokia N97 ‘ The Flagship Device ‘ of Nokia  has an inherent phone memory problem which makes it prone to hangovers and slowness . Nokia Pakistan has been getting these complains when people download their emails or put in thousands of contacts in the phone ,  ( people do have thousands of contacts like I have around 2500 ) .  Nokia N97’s base phone memory is very low and on factory startup it’s around 45 mb  which steeply falls down to single digit within a few days of use .

 N97 memory

Nokia has realized this problem and has released a ‘  Memory Optimizer ‘  available through SW Update not through #*0000# and asking the phone to search for updates however it does not make a big difference .

My father is one of the proud owners of Nokia N97 who bought it on the first day of it’s official launch almost a month ago and for the past week his phone had been suffering from performance problems relating to screen not lighting up , slowness and occasional hang- ups , being the resident ‘ Nokia Guru’  he asked me to fix his phone and here how I did it .

When I got the phone in my hands , (I’m not allowed to touch it in normal circumstances as everyone know once I get it in my hands I’ll install all kind of soft wares on it ) the first thing I did was check the Phone memory and was not suproised to find it at only 6 MB  . To find out about your phone memory go to Applications click on Office than on File MAnager and you can see the available memory on your phone .

 memory 6.3

To fix it , I opened the Phone memory and checked out the memory details and found a substantial chunk of memory eaten up by programs , images and videos .

I installed the ‘ Memory optimizer’  through SW Update and got only a measly 0.3 mb , I think what the software does is optimize and defragment the memory and that’s what it did giving me 6.3 mb of memory from 6 mb before .

 Memory optimizer

Than I went to the Application Manager and checked out the list of applications installed

Widgets1

Nokia has installed all the bloatware i.e Widgets and Applications my father will never use on the Phone Memory like Face Book utilizing 1mb of Memory and no use for my father same goes for a number of other applications like Amazon 1mb , AP News 800 KB , Hi5 534 KB , Soccer 670 KB , Psiloc World Traveler 1mb , Accuweather 883 KB , OVI Store 205 KB and Slides 353 KB .  I removed all these applications to gain a further of 10 mb .

 After WidgetsMemory detail 20mb

The second step was to fix the Messaging .  I’ve setup GMAIL account on my father’s phone so he can keep in touch with his emails and it has downloaded some 1545 headers in the phone at almost 2kb per header it has taken upto 3 mb of space . I went to the settings and shut down the Auto Retrievals and start the Auto Notification with limit of 50 emails .

Phone 30.2mb

The next step was to shift all the SMS and MMS messages to the 32GB Flash memory and delete all of them from the phone memory with future incomings to be saved in Flash Memory .

I also had to move all the pics and Videos to Phone memory and made changes in the Camera Settings to save all the pix to the 32 GB Flash memory .

Phone 51mb

I also removed the temp files and some TXT files on the C:/ directory .

How it all fared , finally I was able to reclaim 44mb of memory and get a total of 51mb Free Memory up from 6.3 after optimization .

The phone is working fine now , no more black screens , no more slowness and no more hang-ups

I did it :) and here’s the proof for it

Thanks. This is excellent. Just what I’ve been looking for all over the Net. Just got a N97 for business use a week ago and have just started to build my contact list, yet it’s complaining of memory problems. Again thanks for a great tutorial on your website.

Thanks for the info. If I purchase the N97 I will keep your hard work in mind.

Its the RAM which fills up and the phone starts to complain about memory .. if Phone memory is even 1 mb left still the phone will work fine as long as its Ram is free…

N97 has a pathetic 128mb Ram i am totally disappointed in it .

Arsalan , N97 has only 50 mb of memory , you should remove the bloatware to make it faster , Nokia has learnt from N97 mistakes and N97 Mini now had 256 mb of memory

Having contact images on the desktop of the N97 really slows it down. I found that removing them (contact shortcuts) from the N97 (and also the N900) speeds things up considerably.

I purchased an N900 as I was disappointed with the N97′s performance. I am soo glad to say the N900 is a much better phone… Plus, being a Linux fan, it allows for tinkering!

@ George – never tried the contact shortcuts but thanks for the tip – N900 is far far better than N97 but still lacks software , it’s like a Ferrari without a Driver :)

It worked perfectly. Finally my N97 is moving again!!!! I am a bit puzzled however and maybe somebody can help, i deleted facebook, psiloc travel, nokia email and accuweather which according to the phone took up approx 5mb of space in total yet when deleted 30mb was freed up? How is this the case. I also installed y-browser for free and that helped too!! Thank you!

    Hi

I was wondering how you managed to move all the messages and emails into E drive ?

When I go to Messages > Settings > Other and select ‘ E drive’ as the new memory, it does change all future messages to be stored to E drive, but the option doesn’t pop up for me to copy it ?

Is there a way for me to do this on the computer through PC suite, or another way ?

  • http://www.senseapplied.com Farhan

If you have already copied messages earlier on the E Drive than the message will not come neither it will copy messages on the E Drive

Very handy stuff guys, Farhan, thanks a lot! Very very good info! I do have a question left; I synch my Outlook Calendar into the phone, where is this data stored? On the phone or mass memory? Same for the email on the Nokia client; once synched, is that stored on the phone memory?

I managed to clean up nealy 25MB, so up from 8MB to 32.5MB!

  • Ruud2000

    Oh, and double the speed!!!!!

  • Ruud2000

Sorry…. Another question, I reinstalled Nokia Maps, without being prompted it installed the 9MB on C:\ again instead of on mass memory! Any ideas?

  • http://www.senseapplied.com Farhan

From Outlook it’s stored in Phone memory also the emails and OVI Maps , you cannot change the settings to Mass Memory hence the problem of shortage of memory :)

HI GUYS AND THANKS FOR THE INFO- I KNOW ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THEIR N97 TOUCH SCREEN, WELL I HAVE A FIX FOR IT
1- DO NOT SEND IT TO NOKIA WHEN YOUR SCREEN STARTS JUMPING OR WOULD NOT RESPOND TO TOUCH BECAUSE THE PROBLEM IS IN THEIR ORIGINAL DIGITIZER. JUST GO TO EBAY AND BUY A NEW DIGITIZER FROM CHINA OR HONGKONG SELLERS(THEIR DIGITIZERS ARE 1000 TIMES BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL NOKIA SPEC AND THE PROBLEM WILL STOP IMMEDIATELY.

2- YOU NOTICE THAT THE NOKIA N97 TOUCH SCREEN LAGS IN RESPONSE WHEN SCROLLING, JUST GO TO WWW. SPB.COM AND DOWNLOAD SPB MOBILE SHELL, IT IS TRULY THE BEST THING FOR YOUR NOKIA N97 BECAUSE IT TRANSFORMS AND FIXES ALL SCROLLING PROBLEMS AND THE U.I IS THE BEST EVER, EVER, EVER-TRUST ME!!!,

I ALMOST THREW AWAY MY N97 BECAUSE OF PROBLEMS BUT AFTER THESE TWO THINGS, I MUST ADMIT, I LOVE THE PHONE NOW AND IT JUST BRINGS OUT THE TRUE CAPABILITIES OF THE PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
