What if Nokia inject fun into a sober looking E75 , the result will be none other than the 5730
Nokia 5730 is a full QWERTY Side Slider with Music and Fun in it’s DNA. The phone I got from Nokia Pakistan was Black with Red Side Strip and Metal bezel around the frame making it a solid sturdy phone . The slide was smooth and firm without any creaks or looseness . I didn’t got the box with it so cannot share the box pics neither can talk about the accessories available with it in Pakistan . On a side note the model I got may not be meant for Pakistan as it’s language options inlcude European languages with no support for URDU / Arabic alphabets neither any Arabic letters were imprint on the keyboard like my E71 and the keyboard also has Euro Symbol on it which is not present on MENA based phones.
The keyboard was same as of E75 and me , an E71 user , the learning curve was non existent , however for some weird reason Nokia has chosen Dot Matrix font for alphabets and Symbols . The only problem I had was finidng the ‘.’ ( Full Stop / Period symbol ) as it was shown as a four dot square and although was at a familiar place for my fingers I had my doubt pressing it but once set I was up and Chatting away on OVI Chat.
Yes OVI CHAT , Nokia 5730 has preinstalled OVI Chat previously known as OVI Contacts and earlier Nokia Chat . If you search for the installed file in the menus you will not find it , once installed , the applications runs in the background and can be accessed from contacts menu upper Tabs . The application kept me connected to my friends and wife on OVI running OVI Contacts on their mobile . Although named as OVI Chat on About details it clearly shows itself to be OVI Contacts . In 5730 there is also Status update on the main standby menu which shows if any friends are online.
Taking a look around the phone , the top side has the Volume and Camera Keys , The lower Side has slots for Micro USB and Micro SD which already contained 8GB MicroSD when I got the phone .
The bottom part contains the Micro Charger and the top contains the 3.5mm Jack. The Power button is inbuilt with the Call End Key on Alpha Numeric Keypad.
The back contains the part which differentiates it from E75 , the 3.2 MP Carl Zeiss Tessar Lens equipped Camera with Dual LED Flash
Notice there is no Ridge to open the back cover as in N97 , 5800 XM and N86 but the method to open the cover is the same , insert your fingernail in the lower part and pull , I admit it took me 5 min to figure it out that’s why I’ve mentioned so you don’t waste your time on it
. The fixing back of cover is also unique instead of slide up or stick the prongs in the bottom and push the cover on the body , on 5730 , you have to stick the top Side prongs (Towards the phone screen ) and push the cover down towards the end on holding the phone in landscape manner
On the side of the screen are the Music Player buttons including FF , Play / Pause and REW backlit keys .
The phone is a Finger Print magnet , could be my sweaty palms holding the phone or extreme humidity in the air , the finger prints are evident all over the phone except the back cover which made of matt plastic and slide out keypad . Notice my smears on the pics below , you can see how dirty it gets
Opening the back cover reveals the BL-4U battery , can’t say anything about battery life , I didn’t checked it but the surprise lies below the battery , the phone was made in Finland in contrast to E75 which was made in China , no wonder my unit has Romanian and other languages installed in it . The SIM Slot is one which Nokia has to work on , what about the Slide Out Tray of N97 and SIM Slider to take the SIM Out , the SIM Slot on 5730 had nothing , inserting the SIM Card was easy but extraction was a pain I had to stick my finger and finger nail to push it out then use the friction on the SIM Surface to literary drag it out , not meant for me who swap the SIM once a day between my E71 for Office and iPhone for home .
Nokia 5730 is powered by Series 60 v3 FP2 , the latest episode of ever popular Symbian Series 60 V3 and precursor of Series 60 v5 which powers Nokia 5800 and N97 . The main standby screen has Application shortcuts on the bottom instead of the usual on the top which is taken by the Favortie contacts shortciuts as in Nokia 5800 and in the middle is the OVI Chat Friend Status and Email previews.
The main menu is deserted , with only Calendar , Contacts , Log , Internet , Maps and Help shortcuts and Messaging , Gallery , Download , Music , Settings and Applications folders.
Much of the applications like GPS , Office etc are hidden in the applications menu . Nokia has changed the naming of menu again , try finding the Office folder it will be in Applications then go to Organizer folder , want to upgrade the Firmware or application Over The Air go to Settings then to Data Manager , why Nokia has changed the menus is incomprehensible , all you can do is make your own folders and move the applications as you desire .
In the Data Manager Menu Nokia did added some extras like now you can choose to update Applications only or Firmware or only run SW checker , everything came out to be updated during my tests but as far as I think the functions do as named i.e updating Apps only , updatin Firmware only and checking if any updates are available , again why three options when one can do it all as in N86 and N97 where I can choose what I like to update .
Being a Xpress Music phone , Music is part of it’s DNA and the Music Menu includes the Generic Music Player , Radio , Music Store , PodCasting Music Search and Recorder .
I didn’t had the chance to look into Music Search but I did check out the Radio option which contains options for both FM Radio and Interne Radio , asalways FM Radio require a wired headset , a nuisance in an Xpress Music phone .
The Keyboard slider also acts as a soft key and there are options in the customization menu to run anyinstalled application when the slider is open , like for me I’ll prefer opening of email app so I can check and reply to them or Gravity so I can check my Twitter account , even on slide close I can return back to main screen.
In the Photos menu , the captured pics are shown as a Carousel
One thing which intrigued me was that in PhoneInfo software ,it’s showing me CPU Speed of 192 MHZ while in Nokia Forum the specs show it to be 369 MHz . I ran the same PhoneInfo on my E71 and it showed it to be 369 MHZ must be some problems with the software on 5730 cause the phone showed no lags . The User available memory is still 50 mb and I’m not going to say anything about it
In conclusion , the 5730 is an excellent phone , again it may not replace the usability of my E71 but for a college / school going teen it’s a perfect phone with Music , 8GB memory card expandable to 32 GB , a 3.2mp Carl Zeiss Camera , a full QWERTY for messaging and email . Price is still not known for Pakistan market but is expected to be around Euro 280
