Nokia Acquires Bit-Side GMBH

Nokia has just announced their acquisition of 39 employee – Berlin based firm Bit-Side GMBH well known for their photo stitch application Pano Man .

According to Nokia this acquisition will help them in enhancing their mapping business

“Acquiring bit-side enables Nokia to offer consumers the world-leading mobile location applications, such as Maps, along with routing and navigation at an accelerated speed” said Michael Halbherr, vice president and head of social location, Nokia. “Nokia has been working with bit-side since 2007, and bit-side has become a strategic development partner to Nokia.” says Michael Halbherr -  V.P and Head of Social Location -  Nokia , he further said “Nokia believes that context plays a pivotal role in the evolution of the Internet. To make the Internet truly personal, Nokia is building the ability for people to always know where they are and what is around them. Moreover, to know where their friends are and what they are doing and how they are feeling. Nokia calls this social location,”

Nokia is developing sensor technologies for their upcoming N97 where the location of a friend could easil be foud be they around the corner or around the world and with location based services it cannot only points out the places of interest but also inform you of what others are doing in your network .  One of the application currently offering this  Ovi Contacts offering location presence and status to authorized friends .

Bit –Side GMBH had been working on imaging technology for long with their Panoman along with strategic partnerships with Yahoo Go Beta 3.0 and Kodak Gallery Application for iPhone .

According to Bit-Side GMBH’s Managing Director Thom Brenner   “Joining Nokia is an exciting opportunity for us”, . “It will be like a catalyst to our developments. We share Nokia’s visions on social and location related services and future of their enabling technologies”.
