So Nokia has finally decided to jump on the netbooks bandwagon with their Booklet 3G , a mobility enhanced netbook with amazing 12 hrs battery life , durable Aluminum Frame and 3G connectivity .
Computers is not a new market for Nokia , in the 80’s Nokia was a computer company when transforming to a Cell Phone manufacturer and their most popular model had been MakroMikkon featuring 2 Mhz speed which was later sold to Fujitsu
Now Nokia is going back to it’s roots with introducing the Booklet 3G having these salient features
- Intel Atom Processor probably Pine Trail with low power usage and support for HD
- Durable Aluminum Body
- Just 1.25 KG
- 19.9 mm / 2cm Thick
- High Def Screen and HDMI output port
- 12 hours battery life
- WiFi
- Bluetooth
- SD Card Reader
- A-GPS Support
- 3G Services and connectivity
- Running Windows 7
- Seamless Synchronization with Mobile Phone through OVI Sync
Regular run of the mill features . so how Nokia will differentiate themselves from other notebook vendors ? and with Chinese White box manufacturers joining the segment is going to be very crowded.
Here comes Nokia and Microsoft’s alliance in play , remember it was said that the alliance is far more than Office 2010 Mobile , now it also covers the OS .
What I predict is that MS will design a lite version of their Windows 7 for Nokia with integrated OVI services . Current Win 7 also works fine with netbooks I’m using one on my HP 2140 Dual Boot with Mac OSX
If you notice on the screen you can see OVI Chat on the desktop . Now no desktop client of OVI chat had been released yet so the possibility could be that Windows Live Messenger will have support for OVI chat given the dreadful situation of OVI Chat on mobile .
The Booklet will also offer “millions of songs download” through Nokia Music so should we expect a Comes With Music Edition
Other OVI services including OVI Mail also seemed integrated in the system
Given the fact that no memory and hard disk details are given , for Win 7 atleast 1GB is necessary and a minimum of 160 GB hard disk is the norm , but I’m getting a feeling with ‘ no VPN required ‘ , Nokia may be targeting Cloud Computing in conjunction with MS Office 2010 Mobile Communicator
Why Nokia jumped into NEtbooks ?
Kai Oistamo Nokia’s Executive Vice President for Devices - the same guy in Nokia MS Alliance Telecon says
We have been shrinking mobile devices for 17 years. Now, we have decided to do something a little bit different,”
Isn’t Nokia going different due to loss in Smart Phone market share with increased competition , profits and MArket Share may go down
Kai further says “There is a clear consumer trend in which a growing number of people want the robust ‘computing power’ and screen size of a PC but with the full benefits of mobility, We are in the business of connecting people and the Nokia Booklet 3G is a natural evolution for us. As such, Microsoft was also the logical partner. They have commanding marketshare in PC operating systems and we feel the familiarity of Windows, with the very unique benefits Nokia brings, will create something quite compelling. We will leverage our heritage of mobility to redefine the segment, bringing unique insight and ensuring seamless integration with the handset, Ovi services and the cloud. In doing so, we will make the personal computer more social, more helpful and more personal.”
Social it is , one of the screenshots in the video shows Facebook what happened to Nokia’s OVI Social Platform ??
Probably this screen shot covers what Nokia Booklet 3G is all about , how many OVI Services can you notice in it ?
I can see Microsoft Windows , OVI Maps , OVI Calendar , OVI Chat , OVI Share , OVI Mail and OVI Files
Price and Availability of Booklet 3G will be revealed in Nokia World on Sep 2nd , what I think that Nokia will prefer to go with Carrier Subsidized rates at around USD 199 , in which the carrier will get the benefit of Data charges , on the other hand , the netbook may also come locked with Carrier SIM .
The other price point SIM Free could be USD 350 – 400 I know it’s low but isn’t that what the netbook market is around ?
Availability , the best time will be Holiday Season between Thanks Giving and Christmas or if Nokia goes with it’s usual delay and end up with the back to school season in 2010 it will be too late for it
What is your say about Nokia Booklet 3G offering all Day Mobility
