Nokia has surely made a power house in form of E72 , with technical specification seen rarely on a business phone such as
· 600 MHZ Processor
· 256 MB User available Memory
It’s much more powerful than the ‘Flagship’ N97 and a better CPU performance than the Nokia N97 Mini .
E72 User Interface
A friend of mine once said , you have used one Nokia , you have used them all . He was referring to the similar user interface all Nokia to be the same and Nokia E72 is no different from that .
Running Series 60 v3 FP2 OS , it’s very much alike the E71 with the usual 7 app shortcut Standby Menu followed by 2 email account , Calendar and WLAN scanning option .
The major difference you will see the change in icons , while some hated the E71 icons , the same people were at awe with the E72 .
The main standby screen is divided into different folders like Messaging , Media , Office , Control Panel and Applications etc each carrying functions to enhance the productivity of E72
E72 For Messaging
Messaging is the strongest feature of Nokia E72 , with Nokia bundling Lifetime Messaging for Nokia license with the device , it proves to be a strong contender to Blackberry devices without any use of proprietary servers as required with Blackberry , be it any network , any data connection from GPRS , EDGE and 3G to WiFi you can get access to your email on E72 via Nokia Messaging .
Nokia Messaging provides a three step solution to setup your emails be it popular Internet based services like Gmail , Microsoft Live / Hotmail , Yahoo , AOL to Nokia OVI Mail to user’s own domain based services be it corporate or personal with support for Mail for Exchange and Lotus Traveler , Nokia Messaging offers an out of box email solution for everyone .
Nokia Messaging supports up to 10 email addresses and the emails are pushed to the device through Nokia messaging server as soon as they are received on user’s servers . Be assured that Nokia does not keep a copy of any of the email on it’s servers it’s just used to forward the messages so complete email privacy and security is ensured .
The best part of Nokia Messaging is that it now supports full HTML and even play Youtube Videos . My only gripe , it still uses phone memory instead of the External memory which may be supported in future.
I’m currently using 8 email addresses since the launch of the service and except a few glitches never had any problem . The service is considerate enough to let me know if they are having a problem with a particular account( usually Hotmail ) by pushing me a message on it and also a message comes in when the problem is solved .
The best way to setup Nokia Messaging is first setup an account on email.nokia.com , on the website you can also setup the email accounts which you want to be pushed to your device . Once setup , you can use the same login and password for Nokia Messaging on E72 and your phone will download the email accounts directly from the email.nokia.com .
You can also add/ delete email accounts later on the phone which are synced with the account on the website .
A Word of Caution : Your E72 comes with Nokia Messaging lifetime subscription which means that your account is linked with your device IMEI . If you change your device later , it’s wise to cancel out your account on the Nokia Messaging and remake it for the linkage to cancel . Else , as happened in my case , the account will get locked , although Nokia will not start pushing your emails to some stranger with your device but still you will not be able to setup the account on another Nokia , unless that too comes with lifetime subscription of Nokia Messaging .
I was locked out of my account for one month , neither I could add or delete email accounts of it nor I could set the same email accounts on another account it was a total lockout but Nokia Messaging people were very helpful and after a few emails and correspondence on Twitter , Davis Fields of Nokia Messaging canclled by account and I set it up again . When I’ll return my E72 back to Nokia Pakistan , the first thing I’ll do is to cancel my Nokia Messaging account and set it up again so when someone else setup their account on the same E72 , I don’t get locked out.
Nokia E72 For Business
Nokia E Series phones had long stood for their ‘ Enterprise’ name or made for Business and Nokia E72 carries the tradition with distinction. The software included with Nokia E72 are
· QuickOffice 5.3 – A Full service Microsoft Office XP and 2003 editor enable the user to create and edit Word, Excel and Power point files on the go . I can feel the frown developing on some , MS Office 2003 and XP what Nokia is thinking , we live in stone age J , but Quickoffice has a solution just go to upgrades for a FREE upgrade to Quickoffice 6 which supports read and edit of Microsoft Office 2007 files . Nokia look into it , we need upgraded capability out of the box so we don’t need to download it .
· Dictionary : Some may say a useless application but for people like me it’s a God send , forget English to English translation on my recent trip to China nearly all the vendors in the Big Brand Mall – Shanghai China were using Dictionary to translate written Chinese into Spoken English while I was using my E71 for Written English to Spoken Chinese and did the transaction . With 41 downloadable language packs supporting
o Afrikaans
o Arabic
o Bulgarian
o Chinese Simplified
o Chinese Traditional / Hong Kong
o Croatian
o Czech
o Danish
o Dutch
o Estonian
o Finnish
o French
o German
o Greek
o Hebrew
o Hindi
o Hungarian
o Icelandic
o Indonesian
o Italian
o Japanese
o Korean ( may not display correctly on phones not meant for Korea )
o Latvian
o Lithuanian
o Malay
o Norwegian
o Persian
o Polish
o Portuguese
o Romanian
o Russian
o Serbian
o Slovak
o Slovenian
o Spanish
o Swedish
o Thai
o Turkish
o Ukrainian
o Urdu
o Vietnamese
It’s a must have for a world traveler
· Font Magnifier : Tired of looking at fine print type font , use Font Magnifier , once a paid application now available for free with E72 , will save your eyesight by enlarging the font upto 140 %
· Converter : Want to check how much the item cost in your local currency , use Converter as a ready foreign Exchange rate converter , not interested in FX what about converting Feet into Yard or Celsius into Fahrenheit the converter supports 11 type of conversions including
o Currency
o Area
o Energy
o Length
o Mass
o Power
o Pressure
o Temperature
o Time
o Velocity
o Volume
· Calculator : A Simple calculator and very old school my advice Nokia learn from Calcium S60 and make something like that please
· Notes and Active Notes : Want to keep notes on the go , how about adding a bit of sound , image or video or want to send it all by MMS , Active notes is the app for you .
· Multi Scanner : Still in infancy , Nokia Multi Scanner acts as a OCR to read business cards and text . In my usage it was a waste , I prefer using Abby Business Card Reader for Symbian which gives much better results
· Wi Presenter : Another blast from the past , Wi Presenter enables the Nokia E72 to connect to the laptop / PC wirelessly via Bluetooth or WiFi and enables the user to control Power point presentations from the phone , even get a preview on the phone right from the screen. In my opinion it’s an excellent piece of software and I’d been using it since E61 to give presentations but I wonder why don’t Nokia people use it when presenting their phones in Pakistan , a great hands on show for the masses
· Adobe PDF: As the name suggest it’s the PDF reader but still a reminiscent from the past , Nokia Adobe PDF reader 2.5 LE is out , make some investment and give us that
Despite the minor shortcomings Nokia has packed an ideal combination of business tools in E72 and to cover the shortcomings well I’ve got ways , I get the software I require J
With all these business tools readily available , do you think I need to lug around my laptop / netbook while on tour , unfortunately yes if only E72 had a TV-Out port , Well some people never get satisfied
Web Browsing on Nokia E72
Nokia E72 , features S60 Browser 7.1 webKit 525 . same as in iPhone , with support for the latest browser technologies like
· Full Web Browsing Experience – See the web pages as they appear on PC
· Support for Adobe Flash – play Youtube Videos , watch Flash Enabled Sites with bultin Flash Lite 3. Player the browser supports playback of FLV and H264 videos .
· Mini Map – enables the user to see a miniature version of the website on the phone screen
· Visual History – shows the we sits already visited as sliding thumbnails to choose from
In my opinion Nokia Web Browser in some ways even act better than a PC Browser as with Visual History .
Other Social Media and Internet Services integration includes
Files on OVI – a 10GB space provided free by Nokia for the user to store their files and also enables them to connect to the multiple computers running Files on OVI to access files in them .
Facebook and My Space shortcuts for direct access to popular Social Media sites
The only lacking I see is Twitter , although fully functional through Gravity still would be great If Nokia can add built-in support for it
Multi Media Capabilities of E72
Beside being a Business usage power house , multimedia is also a strong feat of Nokia E72 , with a builtin FM Receiver powered by Visual Radio which finds the local radio stations instead of tuning into them ( I wish it uses GPS instead of the user selecting the continent , country and then the city , GPS selection would have taken care of it all ) .
Nokia E72 , like all other Nokia models , Real Player , has Share on Nokia to support upload to Flickr and VOX ( Nokia Share is still not supported in Pakistan ) .
The Nokia is the first E Series to have a dedicated Audio Chip for better sound quality and Nokia has positioned the Speaker at the back in a way that it does not get covered by hand nor by the surface , supported by the Camera Ridge .
On Camera side , E72 packs a good 5 MP punch , ideal for taking pictures on the go with 600 MHZ processing power , the pics are processed quickly and are of a decent quality , although a bit below par than the Carl Zeiss equipped Cameras on N97 and N97 Mini
The highlight on Nokia E72’s Multi Media portfolio is the voice recognition music search option , select the Music Search option and just say the name of the Artist , Song , Album or playlist and the song will be selected and start playing . The feature is borrowed from Nokia Xpress Music Phones and is made possible with the help of dedicated Audio Chip
There is also support for Music Store to purchase the favorite tunes on the go . On the music store you can choose the country store you want to us , I have an account on UK store with some credits for free music
On Multimedia side , my suggestion to Nokia is the only thing lacking is the TV-Out option , give us a TV-OUT option on an E series and people will give up their Blackberries for a Nokia .
Gaming on Nokia E72
Nokia , knows business execs now are not the boring bunch , they want excitement in their lives and what best than to add some games to E72 , although not N-Gage compatible which is dying anyway , games are available on the OVI Store for Nokia E72 to enhance it’s fun side .
Apps on Nokia E72
I once told Nokia people that the key to Apple’s success is the Apps and Nokia is working hard to get as many apps as possible for their devices with half a billion downloads , Nokia OVI Store is making waves and offering Apps for all uses and more than a 100 Nokia devices , accessable in 180 countries and available in many regional languages with more to follow it’s a truly Global App store but again improvements in layout and offerings are required .
My suggestion for Nokia is instead of making the OVI Store device dependent , make it OS dependent i.e. instead of offering different apps for E72 and E75, divide OVI Store to offer apps for S60v3 , Fp1 , Fp2 and S60 v5 , to enhance the offerings and making it more universal.
In conclusion Nokia has taken the best of E and N Series and combines them all in the E72 giving the best of both worlds with great multimedia capabilities , Optical Navi Key , a better camera , dedicated Audio Chip , built-in messaging client , out of the box business and entertainment solutions and further enhancements from OVI Store makes it one of the best devices available in the market .
I’ll again repeat myself if only it had a Tv-Out port
