Nokia helping Indus Hospital monitor pneumonia in Karachi

by Farhan on March 21, 2009

Nokia in collaboration with Indus Hospital Karachi – Pakistan has introduced Interactive alerts based on Near Field Communication on their Nokia 6131 NFC Phones to monitor Pneumonia Prevail lance in Karachi .

These Interactive Alerts are based on the RFID Tag bracelet with a unique ID which the child wears during his 6 week vaccination and whenever the parents take the kid to a participating doctor , all he has to do is scan the tag and get medical history of the child and also update his data via GPRS to the server .

This system is very useful of countries like Pakistan where traditional records don’t exist and things like Google Health are accessible to a few . However with the prevalence of mobile technologies in Pakistan and low cost data access rates realtime patient data retrieval and realtime updates can play a vital part in saving lives.

Nokia 6131 NFC RFID Tag

This technology is not limited to Pneumonia surveillance only , people with allergies , heart condition , Asthma etc can wear these RFID tags instead of traditional dogtags and in case of an emergency the ER staff can readily scan the tag and get all the information they need .

Kudos to Nokia to bringing this technology to Indus Hospital , Indus Hospital is living example of what one man if dedicated towards his mission can do , a dream of Dr Abdul Bari , Cardiac surgeon Civil Hospital Karachi , is a 150 bed ‘FREE’ hospital , i.e no one is charged for the services be it a prince or a pauper , if you like you can give 100,000 for the ECG or of you can’t afford a couple of thousand or nothing for a Cardiac bypass will do ,no body is asking what you have given as fee . In case of Indus Hospital , ‘FREE ‘ does not mean cheap and low quality , equipped with state of the art equipment , received as donation from philanthropists the world over , it’s the only ‘paperless hospital in Pakistan i.e from Admission to discharge to paper trail is kept , all data is kept on computers with offsite and offshore servers and data backs ups .

Indus Hospital

With their technological advancements , Indus Hospital is the logical choice for Nokia , Interactive Research & Development Karachi to test their innovation in associaltion with Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH), the Program for Appropriate Technologies in Health (PATH) and MIT Media Labs Next Billion Network program.

Now that’s what I call corporate paybacks
