Nokia N8 Disappoints – Awaiting Symbian ^4

by Farhan on April 26, 2010

While many of us are waiting for the latest Flasgship by Nokia , the coveted N8  to launch , Eldar Murtazin  of Mobile-Review.com not only get to play with it but also posted a full review of the phone with pictures .  Our thoughts about the N8 are as follows – Disclaimer :  All Pictures shown below are Property of Mobile-Review and I’m only using them for reference purposes but the writeup is all SenseApplied.

Physical Outlook

Looking at the front of N8  , we see the usual Ambient Sensor , Proximity Sensor and Front Facing camera so no surprises here and on the right side we can see the Volume Keys and Screen Lock .  Design wise , Nokia has changed from the all rounded corner Nokia 5800isq design to pointed narrowing tops and the Physical Menu Key has been redesigned to be horizontal instead of Diagonal

At the back is the highlight of Nokia N8 , the 12 Mega Pixel Carl Zeiss Tessar lense , 2.8 /  5.4 Auto Focus Camera with what seems like Dual Flash one Xenon for photographs and one LED light for Videos (  I could be wrong ) . The camera is also capable of taking 720p HD Videos at 30 FPS

The Camera supports Geo Tagging both in photos and Videos which puts them on the map for Youtube and Flickr and very handy when using software like Wikitude

In Pictures different photo options are given although I don’t see the Face Detection as in N86 –

In Video mode there is image stabilization option and even Audio can be mute to make a silent video .  Videos are made from HD quality Mp4 to lowest quality 3GPs , Mobile-Review’s screen shot shows only 1 min 38 sec remaining , I wonder which memory they are using to store the videos.

On top of the phone are the Mini HDMI port and 3.5mm Jack along with the power key

The material from photographs seems like rubberrized plastics like the N97 to keep the weight down with no hint of metal although as Eldar says Nokia is using ‘good quality material’

The Software

The interface looks the same as in other S60V5 phones although Symbian^3 does make use of multiple home screen evident from the three dots between Options and Call on the screen .

The Widgets remain the same carried forward from the N97 /  N97 Mini outlook  and in words of Eldar -  Disappointment is the weakest word to describe it (  Russian translated by Google) , even the Menu items looks the same as earlier S60V5 models

Overall I agree with Eldar -  Nokia N8 from early reviews seems like a disappointment -  Symbian ^3 brings no new features except multiple home screens and moveable widgets but as Joe Harlow during her interview with me at Mobile World Congress has said about Symbian ^3 -

“ Symbian ^3 is more modern , contemporary and have extended functionality in terms of customization , higher graphic level , increasing speed and removes what frustrates people like double tapping and un necessary prompts”

but she has also added

Symbian 4 is a very different UI from Symbian ^3 . S^3 has the same Symbian structure as earlier with lot of improvements for graphics , with S^4 we are moving away from familiar and moving into something very new and focus on personalization and customized content you want to interact with

She has further said

I think consumers are in the market to buy the devices be it S^3 or S^4 . Some may wait for S^4 but they are those on the top of the pyramid . With the increased functionality we are offering with S^3 , we think general consumers will buy the Symbian ^3 devices .

So guys we at SenseApplied will keep our wallets closed for Symbian^3 , we don’t mind getting them from Nokia and reviewing them but we are not going to buy any , Symbian^4 is what we are waiting for .

Nokia N8 will be upgradable to Symbian^4 in a major update (like the last upgrade of nexus one to Android 2.2 or the iPhone 3GS to iOS 4)?

It’s a question mark , remember Nokia N900 was supposed to get MeeGO and right in the middle Nokia said no – Unless Nokia gives out an official statement , trust no rumors
