Nokia has recently introduced N85 , the smallest Dual Slide N Series to date with the features which even dwarfs the N96 thus hailed by me as the true successor to their previous flagship the N95-8GB . As Juha-Pekka Sipponen, Director, Nokia Nseries says “The iconic Nokia Nseries dual slider design has evolved to become smaller and sleeker while integrating the newest features and services to deliver the best mobile experience to date.”
I won’t call N96 the successor as it’s just an extension of N95-8gb with no new additions except memory and TV support which many in the world won’t even use .
The N85 although has more and superior features then N96 it comes in the N8X range due to a smaller screen size at 2.6 inch i.e below 2.8 inch standard set by N95-8gb .
The OLED screen although small is brighter , uses less power and displays better color and blacks as compared to other Nokia N Series . OLED or LEP , Light Emiting Polymer , is a screen made of a small dots of organic polymer which emits light when electrically charged . As there is no backlight , the screen is brighter , the power usage is less and even the contrast ratio goes up to 1:1300 as compared to 1:500 of TFT screen on N95 and N96.
N85 also boasts to be the first S60 which supports USB Charging i.e while the phone is on sync with the PC via cable ( Nokia Connectivity Cable CA-101 provided in package ) it’s also charging this reducing the wire one have to carry and also supports simultaneous PC connectivity and Charging . On the move too the phone is charged by microUSB charger ( Nokia AC-10)
The Carl Zeiss Tessar ( protected by a Lens Cover when not in use ) 5 MP camera is now standard on high end N’s and N85 is no exception also offering 30fps Video Capture with dazzling results produced on TV via in-built TV Connectivity. However Nokia again resorts to dual LED Flash . Some must be wondering what happened to the Xenon flash of N82 but the advantage of Dual LED is that it can be used in Video Recording too as compared to Xenon Flash which can only act as a strobe for single image .
Nokia is also touting N85 as a gaming machine and have ‘intelligent’ illuminated keyboard which lights up the keys as per the function required i.e multimedia shortcuts as shown above when in music and video playback and the two circles of dedicated gaming keys as shown below when in N-Gage mode . To make the experience worth while Nokia Pakistan is offering 10 games pre installed as trial with voucher to get one full game for free , I like this trial before you buy offer as I like Asphalt while my kid like FIFA tough choice .
One thing which Nokia borrowed from WinMo mobiles is thethe Five Way Directional Pad also acts as a NaviWheel for faster scrolling through the interface .
The N85 also offers intergrated Fm transmitter good for blasting the stereo with either tunes stored in the phone , from the local FM Radio station or like me from across the world through Nokia Internet Radio . On it’s own too N85 stands up to the N Series name by offering High Fidelity Stereo Speakers and a 3.5mm jack for me plugin my Bose and enjoy the subtle sounds .
For the world traveler the phone also have A-GPS ( Assisted GPS ) which makes use of Cell Tower information to pinpoint the location which can be used to Geo-Tag photos to be sent to Flickr or Share on Ovi. Furthermore Nokia is also offering 3 Month of free Turn by Turn Navigation ( Location Dependent License ) Pakistan usually gets Middle East license which is of not much use . Nokia should work on adding at least major cities of Pakistan to their Map Application.
Other basic features include Bluetooth , WiFi , 3G support , Bl-5K ( 1200 mAh ) battery supporting 25 hours of playback music in offline mode or 300 hours of stand by and Nokia is also including a 8GB Micro SD with Map applications and other related software with plenty of space for user’s own music and application of which many could be downloaded from Nokia Download!
How I’ll use a N85
The biggest feature which tempts me to move to N85 from N95-8gb is the FM Transmitter , I can use the device as a portable video player and Gaming machine , hook it to a TV be it in my home or a hotel room and play games through my Apple Bluetooth Keyboard while blasting the sound , music and gaming action through my 5.1 stereo system . I can also use it for business but by E71 fares better I’ll keep the N85 for fun .
