You’ve heard about it now you can experience it , the winner of XIX TIPA 2009 ( Technical Image Press Association ) Award the most coveted image and photo award in Europe in Best Mobile Imaging Device category, the first phone by Nokia featuring a 8 MP Carl Zeiss Optics lens , the Nokia N86 8MP .
‘Eight’ plays an important role in the Nokia N86 8 MP , it’s series starts with 8 , it has a 8 Mega Pixel Camera , a builtin 8GB memory and the phone I received with warranty starting from August 2009 , the 8th month of the year J and I’ve given it to my wife a while after our 8th wedding anniversary.
To set the record straight , the N86 is not given to me by Nokia Pakistan although the offer was there , my wife saw the phone during our recent trip to China and Dubai and liked it so the loving husband I’m I got it for her not to mention I wanted it bad too , to hold it , to play with it , to find what makes it tick J
The phone I got is the Pakistani edition and Indigo Black in color made in China under the Authority of Nokia Corporation Finland . It supports GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and WCDMA 900/1900/2100 . The Phone is N-Gage compliant , Pict Bridge supportive which let’s on print photos directly on a compatible printer without any PC , having Micro USB which also let’s the phone to act as 8GB Storage plus access to the memory card . ‘dlna’ Certified allowing seamless connectivity between entertainment devices , with Real Player and Bluetooth. Running Series 60 V3 FP2 Software with Java Support with WiFi b/g and UPnP ( Universal Plug and Play for data sharing, communications, and entertainment) connectivity .
The main features of the phone as written on the box are
- Powerful 8MP Camera with Wide Angle optics from Carl Zeiss
- Premium Design featuring hardened glass and metal details
- Bright OLED display , kickstand an 8GB built-in memory
- Access to OVI Services.
- A-GPS , compass and Nokia Maps including 3D Landmarks .
My box also features the same characteristics written in Urdu , Persian , Arabic , Spanish and French .
My word for advice to Nokia , do work on your translations for Urdu , do not rely on software based translators , if you can get the text translated in Pakistan to get a better depiction of what you’re trying to say .
The box also has a reminder to recycle through Nokia We:Recycle program with the following reminder . “ Did you remember to recycle your old phone ? ?Up to 80% of it can have a second life. This pack and most of its contents are also recyclable . With over 1 billion Nokia owners, we all can make a real difference. Check your nearest recycling location at www.nokia.com” .
Those wondering where they can find it in Pakistan , every Nokia care center in Pakistan have a We Recycle bin where you can put your discarded Nokia phone and accessories which are taken to Nokia Recycling centers around the world for proper recycling and disposal.
The Box :
For Nokia N86 8MP , Nokia has again chosen the minimalist approach , the box unlike E75 does not feature useless cases and covers . The box is made of the usual Nokia Grey back box card which is recycleable 20 PAP .
On the front it features a 3Disq side snap of the Nokia N86 8MP in landscape mode showing 3.5G connectivity icon , standby icons of Messaging , Photos , N-Gage , Web Browser , Bluetooth and OVI Maps 3.0 .
The screen also features Calendar , Email notification , OVI notification and Voice Mail notifications. .
The soft keys feature Clock and Contacts and being a Series 60 FP2 device it also shows clock in the bottom instead of on the top like in E75. The date on the phone is Tuesday 17th Feb 2009 at 12:12 pm .
The front also features Zeiss logo for Carl Zeiss optics featured in the lens and a sticker for N-Gage saying “ Get Out and Play with 1 Game inside “
On the front wall , Nokia Nseries website is mentioned nokia.com/nseries and TIPA Awards 2009 logo is given which Nokia N86 8 MP won .
The right wall has no text on it which the left wall has Nokia N86 8MP written on it .
At the back wall , the Nokia N86 8MP IMEI numbers WLAN MAC Address are mentioned along with Pakistan and color of the phone inside and Nokia CE code CE 0434 written .
At the back of the box , Nokia N86 8MP features in 5 different languages as mentioned above are written .
Upon opening the box the first thing is a cover flap . I find it ironic that at one end Nokia is talking about Recycling and on the other it’s wasting precious resources on giving a useless flap . Open the inside flap and there lies the Indigo Black N86 8MP in all it’s glory with it’s Bl-5K 1200 mAh , 3.7v 4.4Wh battery. With Cell made in Korea and further processed in China .
The phone and battery are places in a recyclable preformed plastic tray and the shiny N86 on black plastic shines like a Black pearl .
Nokia has taken care of every minute detail even till providing side ridges to put the finger in and take out the phone and battery fitted tightly in their pockets.
The ridge is not only limited to phone and battery a smaller ridge is also given at the top end to remove the tray .
Under the tray lies the Warranty Card ( no mention of IMEI on the card ) , OVI Suite DVD , Nokia Navigation flyer mentioning that Walk Navigation with Real Time Weather Information is enabled for life on the phone and Drive license may vary by country . Another Coupon is present Activation Code for One NGage game and to be used by 31st March 2010 . It says to use the selection included with this device but I want to try the Need For Speed Under Cover I saw at demo in China so I’m saving it for that .
Also included is User Guide in English , finally no Arabic one which was a complete waste of resources . The first page of the user Guide shows the snaps of Nokia N86 8MP is both Black (Indigo ) and White color and on the second page ‘ Share the Experience’ caption and Nokia Dc-11 Emergency Charger and Nokia Bluetooth Speaker MD -7W are shown . The rest of the guide covers how to use the phone but does anyone read it .
In my point of view , the amount of paper Nokia waste is enormous , the Navigation Flyer and NGage Activation code could be printed on a smaller piece of paper almost 20 % of the current size and the User Guide can completely be avoided by adding it in the OVI Suite DVD thus saving on precious paper resources and ink .
Other accessories in the box include Nokia HS-83 in-ear head phones with rubber adapters , finally Nokia learn’t the old style headphones will not cut It anymore and in-ear headphones are the in thing . A inline remote AD-54 ( finally something not made in China but made in Vietnam ) same as from Nokia N73 , CA -101 Sync cable which can also be used to charge the phone through USB connection on PC and AC-10 E energy efficient , Energy Start rated Micro USB Charger which will soon be a norm with all the phones .
The bottom of the box consists of another preformed plastic tray to hold the Flyers , User Guide and provided accessories.
In conclusion although the packaging is worth a device costing Rs.47,000 / 573 USD / 400 Euros . but Nokia should pay some more attention to the We Recycle claims and use a minimalist approach in phone packaging device .
How I like the phone that I’ll cover in the next post , meanwhile do tell what you think about the box
