Nokia N900 – Pakistan – Hardware Review

by Farhan on December 17, 2009

As I’ve mentioned earlier Nokia N900 is no ordinary phone and does not fit the slogan , if you have used one Nokia , you have used them all . Nokia N900 is much different from any of the Nokia’s I’ve ever used and giving it a run of the mill review will not do it justice .

Last time I talked about the box and it’s contents , this post will cover only the phone and it’s physical appearance, many of you already know the technical capabilities of Nokia N900 namely

  • Arm Cortex 600 MHZ processor
  • 3.5 Inch Touch Screen 800 x 480 screen resolution
  • 32 GB Internal Memory of which 2 GB is used for program Installation and 28 GB for general storage
  • A 5 MP Carl Zeiss Camera same as on Nokia N97

Looking at the Nokia N900 , many will find it bulky at ,  tipping the scale at 185 g as compared to 133 g of iPhone 3GS and 150g of Nokia N97 it’s heavy .  Dimension wise the phone is 110.9 x 59.8 x 18.  With iPhone being only 12.3mm thick , it does look bulky and heavy to carry .

However although bulky and heavy , in two hands operation , the phone feels just right .

Looking at the phone , the first think you’ll notice is the White Nokia Logo right on top of the screen ( portrait mode )  , I think it’s a good addition like in N97 it shows which way the keyboard is to be opened , trust me had a lot of problems with the N97 Mini which does not have the logo placed in portrait mode.

The screen when off or in standby mode turns dark and almost black giving it a mysterious look .  There is an indicator light at the left hand bottom which turns Orange when the phone is charging to Blue and White depending on phone operations such as missed calls and messages.  There is also a front end camera hidden under the dark glass on the upper left hand corner along with a proximity sensor which turns off the screen while it’s held against the face for talking .

The bottom side of the phone has the slide out keyboard and the Stylus . I’ve had the chance to use the Stylus but did held it and it feels solid like a Mont Blac pen .  The Keyboard is what I use the most and it leaves a lot to be desired .  Nokia has came up with great keyboards like on E63 ,E72  , N97 and N97 Mini and could have repeated the same experience here but instead the keys are crammed together in three rows and the top row is so close to the screen that someone with big fingers like me cannot easily use it easily .  May be someday I’ll get used to it but for the past 48 hours my fingers start hurting while typing on it

On the Right side of the phone are the 3.5 mm head phone /  TV Out Jack ,  screen unlocker like the N97 , 5800 and N86 and Right side Stereo speakers and ridge to open the back flap right under the speaker

On the Left Side of the Phone are the Micro USB to be used for sync and charging and Left Side Stereo Speakers

At the back of the phone is the 5 MP Carl Zeiss Camera with 2.8/5.2 Auto Focus lens and a Kick Stand to hold the phone .  Unlike N86 and other phones with kick stand , this one is dumb , there are no functions associated with it , all it do is hold the phone as a desktop stand

When the Screen is slided off the keyboard , the back is fairly bland with only Arm Cortex-A8 , 32GB and designed in Finland mentioned along with two screws to have access to insides of the screen.

Either I’m getting used to it after spending a lot of time with Nokia 5800 and N97 and it itself id , opening the back flap is rather easy .  Just pull it from the ridge and it opens up ,although it’s a bit tight .

The back flap is made of plastic ,  Nokia could have used some metal here to give it class like in N97 Mini and with my previous experiences I know the matt coating will wear off with time . One of the reasons Nokia didn’t added metal is as it could have added to the weight but if I’m carrying a 188gm phone what another 12 gm will add to it :)

Under the flap lies the Memory Card Slot beside the Camera Lens , it’s simple insert and pull

The battery is a dissapointment , BL-5J , the one used in Nokia 5800 , with my use it lasts me one day hardly so I have some chargers available near by

Removing the Battery , gives access to the SIM Card slot .  This time Nokia hadn’t experimented with fancy insertion methods like N97 Mini and E72 , it’s the simple slide and pull cover like older phones .

Beside the SIM Card unit is the Nokia Information sticker , mine was a lot scratched I don’t know why , my phone could be those earlier ones off the shelf

The back flap , Nokia I can live with the plastic back flap but what is with the blue plastic piece under the lens cover , seems like some plastic is being recycled , the Blue also shows around the lens cover when the phone is kept upside down , a very El Cheapo approach Nokia

The refixation of Back Flap is rather easy , just stick the two prongs on the camera side end and push it down to firmly hold it.

Overall I found the N900 to be quiet sturdy with nothing jingling inside like in 5530 XM , it has a good built and useage of quality materials .  What you think about it do discuss in comments
