Nokia Vision of Augmented Reality

by Farhan on September 12, 2009

Nokia Research Labs has recently released a video showing the future of communication through gestures and usage of augmented reality and augmented virtuality in everyday life .  For NRL Augmented Reality is not just the layer over approach over realworld scenario , i.e showing information of the place when you point camera to it but for NRL it means , not only showing the information but also snaps taken there by you or your friends in the past , a tweet you have written about it , a blog post etc ,  beside the info NRL is also working on gestures where a flick of hand you can control the games on your phone being viewed on your wide screen spectacles , yes your Screen sitting on your Nose .  This is Nokia’s Mixed Reality

In the Video Nokia has shown the technologies which they may introduce in future and are nothing short of phenomenal  . Imagine your mobile life in control with a Near To Eye Display Gaze Tracker , through which you can control the menu just by moving your eyeball and flicking your Eye lid , coupled with 3D Audio Surround sound Headphones which makes you feel that you are sitting in a concert or Opera House and ofcourse an obligatory Wristband which generates Hepatic inputs for the screen

Here are my views on the Video

As demonstrated in the video , a woman is shown tied up with the technology , I say tied up cause the poor thing was sleeping while wearing the the Hepatic Wristband

sleeps with wristband

She gets a message early in the morning which is shown on her windows ,  Nokia kindly explain are you also working on a Full Screen Display ??

window as screen

The best part I like is the Eyewear , although too wide for my style , they serve the purpose by displaying  weather , blog posts and news and can even select the news all with eye movements and Eyelid flicks .

The Hepatic Wristband , acts as a chooser for messages , I wonder why the Near Gaze technology can control that too ???

gesture control

The 3D Audio , well I cannot experience it , but the look on her face shows it’s fulfillng ;)

So she gets the messages , selects it with Hepatic input , but why can’t she reply back in words , she sent two messaged both in emoticons replies

Enough gripes , I’m sold with this technology , imagine no more projectors , I can give every participant a Bug Eye Goggle and Stereo head sets and start the presentation from a remote location , they can in between ask questions in form of text message or send their comments .  can’t see a chart ,a simple flick of hand could enlarge that figure , the possibilities  of Nokia’s Mixed Reality are endless , it’s only how we use it
