Open Letter to Nokia on their Marketing Approach

by Farhan on June 28, 2010

Recently Nokia’s marketing had been going down the drain and today they found a place for themselves in the gutter .  Sorry for being so straight forward but Nokia the post you have on today at Nokia Conversations on how we hold our phones , it was good till the last paragraph when it’s said “  Of course, feel free to ignore all of the above because realistically, you’re free to hold your Nokia device any way you like. And you won’t suffer any signal loss. Cool, huh? “ WTF Nokia even my 5 and 8 yr old kids behave better than this .

Sure Apple is having a problem and they are trying to rectify it with immediate release of new firmware  but is Nokia perfect ?

Hell  no ask any N97 owner , the pain they feel in spending 500 Euros or Pounds on the phone to find it faulty and what Nokia did to fix it , none of the firmware released till date were able to fix the issue and we are still waiting for the almighty firmware to come and fix the issue .

Now Nokia let’s talk about loyalty towards Customers

Nokia expects customer loyalty to enhance their sales in upcoming emerging markets what will happen once these bottom line customers move up , disappointments.  My first Nokia was a 3210 and eventually I moved up the financial pyramid and now have N900 among other phones .

Nokia learn from Apple about being loyal to the customer , when iOS 4 is released it’s not only for the iPhone 4 where we have to spend a big amount to have it , the firmware is compatible down the line to Apple iPhone 3G , the 2 year old model.  Give me one example where Nokia has done this for their customers , E61 was an epic phone made obselete by E61i which got the firmware upgrades but Nokia forgot all about E61 , N95-8GB got the firmware upgrades not the N95 plain , N900 is the latest scam by Nokia , sold as the premium phone at the premium price , half way MeeGO was rumored for it and now there is no MeeGo for us .

Nokia you should take advantage of your customers there is nothing wrong with that but do it professionally  make a viral out of it or something like that but again in your own thoughts you are the almighty Nokia and can do whatever you do like , just take a look below and see how many enthusiasts you have disappointed and lost .

Hear hear, exactly what I just posted on their website see below, Apple WILL solve the problem, they are very good at that, with Nokia, it wasn’t until I’d had my Nokia n95 18 months that it actually worked properly (in a fashion).
I upgraded to the n96 and it was like a different team of developers had started all over again and not even communicated with the n95 team. Rubbish, then they can piss take another company. Unbelievable. They need to look in the mirror.

    ____From their blog________
Yes you may be able to hold a nokia in any way but at least the iphone software works and is the best in the world.

I’ve used Nokia’s for the last 10 years and still don’t have an iphone (I’m waiting to see what happens about the antenna issue).

In the time I’ve used Nokia’s the software has become buggier and buggier, my n96 is slow, buggy, it crashes…

Nokia can’t really talk. They have their own problems, much bigger ones.

Can I ask you for a single, small favor? Take two of your fingers and use them to show me just how deeply upset you got by the joke? Would you also wish to tell us if you work for Apple are just extremely badly suffering from the Stockholm syndrome?

    Sheesh.

@Evada check my site how apple centric do you find it , I’m hooked to Nokia from the strat but now it has start to hurt

    @Farhan,

This article of signal should not be linked to over-all Nokia issues.

Apple also used cheap and bad marketing, touting all-magical, revolutionary features like copy, paste, multi-tasking, excellent antenna design, super durable glass, etc.

Why don’t you consider that also? Marketing on one specific issue or product should not be related to over-all brand and all products.

I am a Nokia user and i think it is perfectly fine to use this humor as an attack against Apple, or any company.
Atleast Nokia accepts their mistakes like N97, etc, not like Apple who says “Hold your phone differently

Every company has different strategies, Apple gives you free software upgrades, but charges you a heck of premium initially, charges for everything they can, like i-movie, gps, required data plan, etc, etc.
Nokia gives all this for free and the phone itself at a much cheaper price.

Why not talk about that in your open letter?

Farhan, I think you’ll be very happy with S^3 and S^4, and MeeGo if you are more into that. Its been a dry spell, but fortunately, that is over.

Dont forget, Apple is the one jabbing at Nokia “Connecting People” and claiming to be the largest when they are not.

  • http://www.senseapplied.com Farhan

Mark I’m all for MeeGo and S^4 , S^3 in my opinion is just redressed S60V5 – Nokia did picked up on the ‘Connecting People ‘ thing and it was in god humor

  • James

Dear Farhan, you don’t have a clue what you are talking about. Instead trying to get fame bashing Nokia, why not write about all their amazing new services and potential of Symbian^3. If you still prefer to write BS, there are much more bad things to say about Apple and their evil empire than Nokia.

  • http://www.senseapplied.com Farhan

James , again this site had been all about Nokia ,I’m in no need for some cheap fame Nokia in Pakistan know who I am and what my capabilities are .
The purpose of the open letter was to make Nokia aware of their mistakes . Coming to Symbian ^3 , study it a little closer it’s just revamped S60V5 , S^4 and MeeGo is what I’m waiting for . Nokia has a great potential in phones but currently they are traveling in so many boats that even they don’t know what direction they are going . I have said earlier if Nokia would have played their cars right with N900 and Maemo , they would have given Android a very tough time . Soon I will write about the technologies and concepts which Nokia had and could have given them an edge but they gave up on that

Hey Farhan, I can understand the frustration u must b going through with Nokia not really doing something to stay up with the market.
Ive been and still am using only Nokia Phones. ( Currently the N900 & the N97)
Eversince Ive seen, all Nokia has been doing is make 10 models of fones, put some feature in this phone, some in tht, leave it out in the other.. So u always eneded up buying fones but missing out some feature in tht other fone so u wud long to buy tht other fone too.
Coming to the N97, I bought it as a Flagship Device expecting a lot from it, which it does offer, but at the cost of Very Low memory in the C: Drive which needs to stay fairly empty for the phone to work properly, which causes my fone to work pretty slow n hangs at several occasions.
Then they have very little RAM, I cannot even surf proper websites at times as the browser simply exits, cannot keep more than 3 to 4 heavy apps running as some or the other exit wen i open another app..
So their strategy has quite been the same, LEAVE OUT SOMETHING in a fone so tht u buy the next model.
Coming to the statement u made bt Apple releasing quick fixes for their fones n Nokia not doing tht.
I suppose thats because Nokia makes so many freakin phones at a Time as compared to Apples approx 1 Iphone model a year, they dun seem to b able to manage it or it cud just be their usual marketing tactic, hv the user buy the next model.
All these tactics were ok till b 1 or 1.5 yrs ago, As of today, there are so many freakin companies making fones capable of doing same or more as compared to them, with faster n smoother UI etc etc, tht after a particular amt of getting frustrating, the user wud simply trash his nokia n jump onto another brand.
They have to realise this n change their tactics.
There was a time wen most of my friends had Nokias in their hands, some Sony Ericsson n a few with Motorolas but today, most hv an Iphone or a Blackberry, i with a coupla others r left with nokias.
Ive been very loyal to Nokia but tht doesnt mean i keep spending Huge amounts on buying phones tht keep hanging all the while, restarts wen u wanna make an emergency call..
When the hell will Nokia realise this ???
As we all see, their market coverage has already stoooped down a lot, if they still dont do anything, they will hv to shut shop sometime sooner or later …
I wouls also like to say that Im V V V V V Happy with the N900 , this was one freakin device which had all possible features wen it was launched last year n I would say is still amongst the Best of the Lot..

By typing all of the above, I do not mean that all other Brands r better than Nokia.
Apple speaks bt their Iphone like those features never existed before.
A simple thing like multi tasking exusted way back in the N7650, a 5 mp camera has been around since the N95 days, video calling has been around since the 6680 days n so on …
The Blackberry phones, apart from Push EMail ( which now exists even on nokias ) n the BBM, wat else do those phones offer anyways ?? I find them to b pieces of shit, especially for the price its being sold..
I just hope Nokia realises where they r scrweing up n rectifies all of It.
Lets hope Meego does the trick ..

    Hi all,

I agree with most of what you have said and Nokia more or less forgets the previous phones and starts a new series or model, at which point the previous one becomes obsolete and you gotta buy the new phone, however, now people dont do that anymore. So its high time Nokia Changed its techniques.

Plus I would like to make a comment about messenger, well true you can download ten emails but damn it its only a trial version and Nokia expect the operator to charge us for that or operator to support. Instead if Nokia just release the application just like the other free apps, people will have the option to use or not to use. In any case does Nokia think people are so dumb that they dont know that they have to pay for data? I m thoroughly disappointed with Nokia’s haphazard action to impress the subscribers and then disappointing them.

    Cheers,

    Deen
