OVI Mail – Email for All

by Farhan on March 21, 2010

Olli Pekka ,  CEO Nokia , has a dream which he has repeated many a times at different forums , he wants the world’s masses ( the people living in emerging markets )  to have their first email and internet experience on a mobile phone and his team at Nokia has worked hard to make this dream a reality .

If we look at out connected life , email stands at the top of the pyramid , it’s one tool which keeps me informed if someone has commented on my Facebook status , sent me a DM on Twitter , asking me a question on the blog or has a business proposal for me , to manage my online life , I’m using Eight email addresses from Gmail , Hotmail , Yahoo, AOL , to my blog emails and business email addresses , I’m so hooked to email that usually it’s the first think I see when I wakeup and last when I sleep with my phone pinging the whole day keeping me in the loop of conversation . Shut down my email for a day and my whole life will fall down like a house of cards .

OVI Mail

You know how email had been beneficial for your business now think the wonders it will do for someone using it for the first time in his life .

Nokia is now going after the market for which email is a new concept and now they have the tools and software in place .

Remember the CES 2009 keynote address of Olli Pekka , which device was the center of his presentation , it was not something featuring the latest technology costing 100’s of Euros but a simple Series 40 phone costing only Euro 32 ( now it costs Euro 20 is Pakistan ) which can access the internet and email .

This phone and similar like it along with the OVI Mail solution are bound to bring the masses in the emerging countries their first email experience.

How successful it had been for Nokia ?

In about a year of it’s launch , OVI Mail has seen 4 million accounts opening with the first million opened in first 6 months , these figures are more impressive then early performances of Hotmail , Yahoo Mail and Gmail combined .

With availability in 180 countries and accessible in 20 languages

Arabic Bahasa Indonesia Bahasa Melayu Bengali
Finnish French German Hindi
Italian Spanish L/A Portuguese X2 Russian
Chinese Spanish ES Tagalog Thai
English UK English US Vietnamese

With first time users of email in emerging countries in mind , OVI Mail currently has only 1 GB of space which is more than enough for the targeted market and with the ease of creating an account directly from the phone , the emerging countries were on the top of the list of countries where the most accounts were opened .

The question arises why Nokia , a device manufacturer wants to give free email to the world ?

Nokia wants people to communicate especially the small business owners who through email can better connect with their suppliers and customers and with all time mobile connectivity can conduct business from any where . In emerging countries where the cost of owning and running a computer combines with shortage of electricity and hindrance of land based and Wireless  internet access far flung areas , email on mobile phones are always present and with a small footprint and optimized for mobile with less data usage it’s also the easiest and least expensive .

In Nokia’s long term plans  are to provide a solution to people which will increase their income and livelihood and later when they plan to upgrade their phone which brand they will choose ?  A Nokia  whose solutions and devices had made it easier for them .
