OVI Suite 2.1 Beta – A few pointers

by Farhan on January 21, 2010

Nokia has now released OVI Suite Beta 2.1 for the masses , earlier , the beta was available only to the selected few and yes I was one of them .

A brief overview of OVI Suite 2.1 beta includes

Features

  • Contacts sync with Ovi.com – keep your contacts safe online
  • Video support – transfer, play and share your videos
  • Get new device applications (Independent Application Delivery, IAD) – keep your device applications up-to-date
  • Windows 7 support – extended support for new operating system versions
  • Download Ovi Share library – get a copy of your Ovi Share content to your computer
  • Contacts sync with Mozilla Thunderbird – support for new, popular desktop PIM applications
  • Error fixes and performance improvements
  • New languages (Hindi, American English and Ukrainian)

If Nokia is pushing OVI Suite so much what will happen to the Nokia Pc Suite –

Well according to Nokia PC Suite will soon vanish and OVI Suite will be the only software available from Nokia .

Just a few pointers

  • Nokia OVI Suite 2.1 is not compatible with N900 so those with N900 still have to use PC Suite
  • Nokia OVI Suite 2.1 supports updating your device while connected via Bluetooth , checked on E72 and N86 8MP

  • Nokia OVI Suite 2.1 sync contacts with the OVI.com contacts but the sync is both way , I have a number of trash contacts on ovi.com and have to remove them and still figuring out a way
  • Nokia Software Updater will not work if OVI Suite 2.1 is working so it’s better to use OVI Suite for software update
  • Haven’t used Share feature as it’s not available in Pakistan , neither tried the Thunderbird as I don’t use it

If you provide feedback to the OVI team then please deliver the following suggestions!

Whenever my bluetooth enabled device comes close to my pc and gets connected, OVI pops up the entire application!

I want it to stay minimized…i keep moving back and forth from my pc and i dont want the application to pop out of the system tray every time my phone connects to the pc…its plain annoying!

Second. In system information (in About ovi suite) I really don’t want to know the version numbers of all the sub component applications running under the OVI interface!

What is the point of having an integrated application if you still keep thinking of it as a collection of individual modules. Yes software gets designed in modules but keep that version tracking and module listing internal, consumers arent really concerned if you are using PC Connectivity Solution version 9.45.0.0 or whatever! Why tell the end user of the software update applications version number either! They list 6 different modules and their versions…all i care about is if the OVI Suite version I have is the latest or not!

@momers – your points are valid and thanks for pointing them out ,I have the same pop up problem but I guess I’m so used to it that never paid any attention to it . I’ll inform the OVI team in this regard and you can also do the same at betalabs.nokia.com – Thanks

Same here… like the app but I really don’t want it to popup 30 times a day when I’m at work.
