For past couple of days I’d been trying to install Mac OS X 10.5.7 on my HP 2140 Netbook running the usual 1.6 Mhz Atom processor , 1GB Ram and 160 GB hard disk .
Why I want to go OSX , well it’s for no particular reason , I’m happy with my Win 7 running on it with no problems , but then I thought why not try OSX too which at first seemed very simple as per the instructions provided on the net .
In this guide or in other words my installation story I’ll keep the procedure simple highighting the mistakes I made which took me 4 days to install .
First what you will require for HAckinstosh
1) A HP Netbook – on what else you will install the OSX
2) External Monitor – very important as during installation the tiny screen of Netbook will not show you all the options
3) USBKeyboard and Mouse – once the installation begins , your keyboard and trac pad will not work
4) USB External DVD Rom Drive to install the software
5) Another pc/ laptop with DVD writer connected to high speed data network – You need to download iDeneb v 1.5 10.5.7 which is the installer for OSX on netbooks and other Win based machines , the download is around 3.8 GB – you also need to download the PPF patch from ihackintosh.org to fix the original iDeneb ISO .
6) Patience – very very very very important , there came the time when I felt like throwing the netbook down the balcony
Hackintosh Begins :
First download iDeneb 1.5 10.5.7 , there are numerous Torrent Sources and Rapid Share files available , the original iHackintosh site does not have the links and the site on their Twitter Account is not working . The Download is around 3.8 GB so be patient unless you have a high speed net connection
Download PPF Patch from iHackintosh site , The PPF is to patch the OSX ISO you have already downloaded else it will not work , missing this step made me download v 1.3 , v1.4 burn a couple of disks and waste 2 days figuring it out
ISO patched and all set , burn it on DVD – people had also been using their USB Flash Drive but I didn’t had one handy to spare .
Connect External Monitor , USB Mouse and Keyboard and USB DVD ROM to your netbook – as HP 2140 only has 2 USB ports , I used Apple Keyboard with builtin USB HUB and Mouse . Connecting everything is important as once the installation begins , it will not recognize and let you use any additional peripheral attached then .
Start your netbook and go to BIOS Menu , here find the Sata for HDD and disable it else during installation you will not be able to find your hard disk – read 1 day wasted only on this
Restart the netbook and press FN F2 or what ever you have to use External Display and immediately hit Auto Adjust button on monitor for it to show pixels as per it’s resolution else it will suck to 1024 X 576 pixel and will not show you any installation options .
Some Text will show , just press any key and you will see an Apple Logo with a circular animation below it . If the Animation is on almost three quarter of the screen your monitor has adjusted the resolution if it’s touching the bottom of the screen , the monitor has not auto adjusted and you have to restart your Netbook.
To restart , your normal , keep the power button pressed will not work , take the power cable out and then take the battery out to restart the machine – hectic but that’s they way In did it .
If monitor res is adjusted , in a while you’ll see the menu asking for your language preference , choose and press next and you will be great an Apple OSX Style menu with iDeneb Apple logo in the center and install and a Back Arrow buttons under it . It’s better to create a hard disk partition before proceeding with installation if later you want to Dual Boot your netbook ( I’m running both OSX and Win 7 ) go to Disk Utility option, you will see your hard disk mentioned on the left menu , if not , you skipped the SATA disable step , take out your battery and restart . choose Disk and create partitions using Erase option and disk format should be “Journaled”
Go back to the main menu with Ideneb Logo and click Install , choose the partition you want to install , SKIP the Disk test , very important if the disk test fails , take out the battery and restart and installation will continue , again Patience is a virtue here as the installation time will be calculated at around 3 hours , fear not it will be done in less than an hour .
If everything goes well , restart your machine after installation and do not press any key , you will be taken to the OSX setup menu to choose your user name and all and you’ll be running OSX on your Hp 2140 in no time .
The problems I’m facing with OSX are
1) Fan is not working
2) Dock Animation didn’t worked at start , activated it in preference menu
3) yet to try Wifi and network connection
4) Mouse movement is very fast , took it to slowest in Mouse settings
I’m working on getting HP Essential tools for OSX will post later on how it worked out .
If you having any problems installing or have any queries you are most welcome to ask in comments
Sorry no screenshots , don’t want to go through the installation routine again , I’ve lost my patience
