Symbian ^4 First Look – An Overview

by Farhan on February 25, 2010

Symbian Foundation has released the first look video of the upcoming Symbian ^4 platform expected to be launched Q4 2010 or Q1 2011 .

A brief overview of these videos shows the rendered Symbian ^4 device which looks very much like the N97 with exception of dedicated Home and Back Keys along with call send and end keys .

The main standby screen is customizable with live widgets such as Weather Widget and you can even play games via Puzzle Widget as shown in the screen cap.

The standby screen supports multiple screens and each screen can have it’s own background and color much like the Maemo Platform .  With the 3 Squares for screens shown at the bottom , I think that it supports only 3 standby screens .  The graphics on the screen can be customized as the clock is stylized . On the above Right hand corner there are 4 more boxes with one highlighted , what it shows , could be different Profiles or modes .  The Signal and Battery status icons had been moved together to left hand corner and the downward pointing arrow seems like the media /  menu bar

The main menu screen has also seen a revival with Grid layout and changed icons on the bottom of the screen are three fixed icons once again showing the four squares , one showing Camera and the last one showing a Shopping Cart which may be linked to OVI Store .

In the Videos , Symbian Foundation has only shown the Photos App which has Tile type preview , sort by Albums and Photo menu .  One thing which I noticed was that the bottom menu in photo app now has the squares removed and Photo icon and Album icon is now shown and icon increased from three to four .

The transition seemed smooth but the dragging gives more of a feel of resistive screen than that capacitive as on X6 . On the photos there is also a menu bar and the shopping cart is also present here , what Nokia trying to do , we can buy pics off OVI Store or can put ours for sale instantly
