Nokia N9 Receives First Major Update

Nokia talked about the major update to N9 a couple of weeks ago and behold here it is today.

The version 20.2011.40-4 aka PR 1.1 is some 218.6 MB and brings improvements to

NFC Tag reader to interact with NFC Tags.
Better Multitasking.
Improved memory management.
Lock Screen Music Controls
Color Filters to Photo and Videos
SWYPE
Faster MfE sync
Better Noise Cancellation
New Charging and Calendar Indicators in Standby Screen
Default – Close Apps with Swipe Down
Improvements to Twitter , Store (Nokia) and other default applications

Remember you cannot connect Nokia N9 to Nokia Suite for update , it is offered OTA (Over The Air) and is better to be downloaded via WiFi as opposed to 3G . Update notifications will be given by the phone when available or you can also go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Updates to check if update for your region is available.

As with all updates it’s advised to make a backup through Nokia Link .

Nokia 5800 updated to f/w 40.0.005

Finally the Kinetic scrolling has arrived on Nokia 5800 . I’d been predicting that Nokia will not leave 5800 XM as they still have to sell the Navigation Version and now it has come true , the new firmware is out on OTA update and NSU .

I’ve yet to test the update myself once I reach home , as I’ve given my 5800 to my mom and moved to N900

Nokia 5800 f/w 40.0.001 actual or hoax ?

The guys are Smartphonearea.de have posted a screen shot of Nokia 5800 XM running Firmware 40.0.001

release dates 16th Nov 2009 and is meant for Nokia 5800 XM Product Code RM-356

The highlight of this firmware upgrade is the Nokia N97 / N97 mini like widget standby screen

no other details are mentioned , I have my fingers crossed that it not be a fake and Nokia will soon release the 5800 XM F/w 40.0.001 , on the plus side Nokia has announced Nokia 5800 Xpress Music Navigation Edition so to increase the product life line , it could be reality

Clicking Software Updates on OVI Suite 2.0

In short for all the Firmware Junkies like me who need their fix once they hear of the release of the latest software .

Just look at the snap above , Nokia E52 firmware 22.9 is here , I was told about the Firmware upgrade when interviewing Trude and asked her about Voice loss problems in E52 and she told me that the latest Firmware is ready and will soon be available .

Well the Firmware is not available on the NSU neither OVI Suite mentions it , but NaviFirm has it.

The download procedure is fairly simple

Select your phone in First column

Select the Firmware required

Choose the product code ( as for my E52’s product code is not available I choose the Finland one as English i default everywhere)

selected the files in the fourth column and click download from FiRe , the best part it lets you make a custom folder to download .

Now the question comes on how to install it , well I’ve heard Nokia Care Suite ca do it , if it works I’ll write down the complete procedure for now curb your search for firmware through NaviFirm and start the quench for installing the latest

Finally the wait is over and Nokia has released 5800 Xpress Music’s latest firmware 31.0.101 , available only through NSU and it’s a 122 mb download

What’s new in the release , well I’m in the process of installing it will inform in the next post

UPDATE : There are no visual changes only some big fixes , the phone now seems more responsive and touch works better

Nokia N97 – Firmware 2.0

Finally Nokia is slowly realizing the problems with their flagship N97 and slowly taking steps to rectify them . First it was the memory optimizer which in reality did nothing but now Nokia is going for a more serious approach , upgrading the entire Firmware to version 2.0 - Displayed at Nokia World

The enhancements will include

Kinetic Scrolling comparable to that of iPhone ( atleast on video it looks the same flow ) ,

Newer Applications and Widgets , here I differ as it will result in more bloat ware on phone memory , Nokia can make the shortcuts available to be installed on demand

Enhanced stability , this I’ll see when I’ll use it

The major upgrade is memory enhancement , those who had been reading me earlier know my gripes about the N97 Phone memory , right now the one in the family has only 25mb left . Nokia is taking steps to enhance it up to 25 MB to 30 MB that means available total memory will become 75 MB to 80 MB up from 50 MB currently available .

The newer firmware will be available from October’09 , I sure am looking forward to it
